I conceived my intervention with a ‘video essay’ realised during an art residency on Schwanenwerder Island in Berlin, deciding to work on the architecture of the place, the ‘flow of time’ in contemplating the landscape and my relationship with technology. Living for three months in one of the few houses on the island and having private access to the water, I began to perceive the enormous window of my studio as an aquarium in which, safe from the reality of the surrounding world, I could observe the lake. The window slowly became the extension of the laptop screen. As if trapped in an imaginary computer, I observed how rain, wind and snow were free to quickly modify my view, dictating times utterly different from those of our society, which is increasingly conditioned by technology. Still, it is also an element that protects an environment in a more metaphorical sense. Other times I consider water a component capable of transporting my body - intended as an archive and travel tool immersed in it - towards an indefinite and imaginative elsewhere. I worked at Palazzi di Villa Romana di Casignana considering the site from an 'aquatic' point of view, swimming and diving, looking for underwater ruins. Locals say they can be seen sometimes through darker shadows in the water: it is unknown if that is a piece of accurate information. What vision did the guests or the traders have coming from the sea? What did they think in front of the Villa and the other houses along the coast? I asked myself what vision I could have while immersed and floating in the water, waiting to touch the ground with my feet. How would the landscape appear to be to me? Politics use islands and everything that makes them such peculiar geographical sites: water, wind and sand, for example. Pedroletti and Schaal thus set out to answer the question: “How can we create autonomy of thought in machine-learning systems?”. They do so by limiting the data input, which would appear to be an error due to its incompleteness – even in the subsequent output. Both artists see it as a work in progress, as scope for a new space of thought and mutual dialogue. In 1973 Gordon Matta-Clark, invited to Genoa by the Forma gallery, created one of his first legal cutting interventions: A W-Hole House. The artist transformed the architecture of an abandoned house in Sestri Ponente, not far from Val Polcevera and the districts of Sampierdarena and Cornigliano, into "an architecture". First of all, we would like to understand here as an act of interruption of thought conventional. "Anarchitecture is making space without building it", - writes Matta-Clark - "Anarchitecture adds a notion of non-material events. Architecture is closer to the perfect game of voids". Artists are asked to work with the absence and possibly fill it. It deals with an elusive, not cynical, provocation; we would like the collapsed bridge, like the house in Matta's project. Working in absence and absence is talking with someone or something that should have been in that place or that has been in that specific space for some time. One would ask to work oxymoronically with a presence/absence, perhaps to enable one different mobility (dialectic?). It means imagining that we can redistribute a mass, charged with tension and perhaps also ambiguity, to transform it into one of the possible futures. On a neurological level, the absence is a fleeting suspension of consciousness: a crisis, which then remains the impression that something happened profoundly anomalous (absurd?). There is no past and future in what I see, only what I observe. The landscape is wounded by various architectures inserted with violence, both in their presence and absence: architectures alien to the place imposed but fragile. I wondered how to resolve that broken and disharmonious vision. I isolated the elements "sky", "hill", and "broken bridge". I moved them to fill that visual void with natural architecture, leaving the image apparently unchanged. In the seeming stability of the two media, a third element ambiguous and unstable comes in: to exist as an opera it can't accomplish its function as an object, vice versa to exist as an object, it needs the same space that is missing within the opera. The general meaning of the verb, therefore, is directed to the plot, the deception, the trick. The contradiction is with the architect, the noble profession whose greatest purpose is to modify, influence, rationalize or simplify the existence of the others: from the daily life of everyone, and their private space, up to the public and collective one. The artist is also a third element: the one without constraints that saves the objects. The one who assembles them free of functions because they are unique and unrepeatable copies. The artist grants the audience the role of the architect and the opportunity to push the imagination beyond a certain volume, that of a real house, to create an imaginary space starting from these three apparently simple elements of a place where nothing appears as it is. Yet what we observe is really a brick of standard size, which Neufert proposed as a reference for building Hitler's Berlin, and after the war, it was adopted as a reference system for the reconstruction of Germany. An object here fails its intent, isolated from the context, and re-proposed as a sandcastle, communicating that he is something other than himself. Alice Pedroletti, on the other hand, focuses on paper, a material that Van den Broeck has often used, and creates a collection of two-dimensional sculptures, experimenting with paper-making techniques. Upon entering the Archives, elements are immediately noticeable, and others reveal themselves over time. One of the most visible and bizarre objects is a large plastic palm tree, dusty, old and far too big in proportion to the space. It can also be found in the images collected in the folders: sometimes adorned, sometimes in the background, sometimes taken by mistake—a bulky, disturbing visual element, seemingly without logic. A large fragment that overhangs the space and our thoughts and that we have thought of hiding, concealing from view, re-archiving. Yet it is there and a more than defining element of that place. The palm tree is a forgotten set, archived in storage; a memory of a distant landscape, of an 80s set design; a backdrop of a suspended play that arrived who knows how in the studio, perhaps in the compulsion to accumulate, to archive, and which is now simply there. It represents a frozen, motionless, unreal nature, without fruit, no need for water or light, and no growth because it is already an adult plant. The palm tree is a symbol and oxymoron of infinite time, dilated so much that it potentially lasts forever. It is present everywhere and in every shape and size, from the support for archives to packaging and displays for objects, to the messy sketches of sculptures and drawings, to being the subject of the work itself, the final artwork. Paper reigns silently in every corner of the space while not showing itself as shamelessly as the palm tree. Paper is used to wrap presents, transforming an object into a desire, making something silent, noisy, and present, and adding a spatial-temporal value to the act of unwrapping. Paper becomes a multifunctional and multi-sensorial element. It retains that characteristic of infinite nature that the palm tree represents, but which plastic makes unreal, especially to the touch. Paper is a support for notes, which fill the folders of the archive. Sometimes funny and mysterious words are written in several languages that intermingle. It is a language to be deciphered, made up of symbols to be translated, which, reworked, takes a new shape with embroidery and thread, forming irregular patterns made up of interlacements and new possibilities. Paper that protects. They are prototypes: colored, temporary and fragile. Many resemble small organisms living underwater or in peculiar environments, others are similar to furniture or everyday object details. The whole series forms the landscape of an imaginary city, where architecture is organic and mixed with animals and plants. My objects don’t have a specific purpose but incorporate all possible functions. They evolve over time, due to their material: paper and elastic bands. Ops is an audio/video installation, including one projection, four wallpaper letters, and an engraved glass board sculpture to communicate. Projections concern one eye, which slowly opens and closes. The eye appears erroneously stopped, like a photograph, but remains a video, slowed down, exasperated. Through the blinking of the eye and the subsequent reading of a specific machine connected to a computer, the person can control a computer and get to move to break the walls of a forced condition. What you see in reality is someone watching, monitoring, living. The viewer's point of view is that of the computer point of view. The eye is an instrument for collecting data, while other organs are made to give information. How we transform communication if we are caught in an instant snapshot of our life? Can we always be part of a group? Sometimes communication becomes a different language, and our body condition becomes a separate "country" where we have to stay and live until death. In Ops, the eye becomes a door to eventuality, the power of the desire to share thoughts and ideas, the strength of the indomitable soul locked inside a body, which limits us. We are used to thinking of an archive like something firm and constant to take refuge in or to refer to, but in fact, we discover that it is a living place subjected to continuous changes. The images reflected by the mirrors of the sphere, surreal and in motion, recreate an evocative atmosphere of universal and fascinating beauty. the most important library in the region, also hosting small family archives. What about female kids in family archives? Why they’re not in group photos, and still, today, rarely in groups in the street? I called out some local girls to work with me on a new archive, starting by reenacting the old pictures with male kids holding ‘mostaccioli’. These traditional ornamental biscuits are also made for religious purposes or as a wedding gift from brides' families to the husbands: in Italian “, la dote”. The girls have ages between 5 and 29: different generations and among them an Argentinian kid, to underline the presence of a new community in Soriano, where Argentinians come and stay to ask for Italian citizenship due to their family roots. https://imageproxy.viewbook.com/24529/39a5cd6ae6dae50fae18fba7f82f09b4_hd.jpg Mostaccioli Mostaccioli is typical Calabrian biscuits prepared with a few ingredients: flour, yeast and lots of fig honey. The main characteristic is their strict consistency, which allows them to be stored for a long time. ---- I made my own ‘mostaccioli’ working with a master mostaccioli, Mr Martino. Some of them were inspired by the archive and the statues, and Martino invented others. The global Coronavirus pandemic created new conditions for arts and culture. Through contemporary art, I investigate the concept of 'atrium' (lobby) from a processual and theoretical point of view: a crossing space between landscapes, urbanscape, inhabitants, visitors, and artists. The atrium space can be a physical architecture, a specific 'atrio' within a particular city, or a fictional one. Following the idea of an imaginary architecture, I focused my studies on the multiple possibilities of the atrio-concept.
